What Is a Good Size For a Walk-In Closet?

The right size of your walk-in will naturally depend on the amount of square footage you can allocate to it, but it will also be influenced by the design and layout of your closet. Layouts can be customized and tweaked to fit your needs and space, however there are a couple of basic starting points to consider: square or long and narrow.

Square walk-ins tend to be smaller, often around 5’ x 5’. These closets are well suited to open shelves with drawers underneath on a couple of the walls, with space for hanging clothes on the other two walls. Additional drawers or storage solutions can be added beneath the clothes hanging bars.

Longer walk-in closets are naturally larger than their square counterparts, with common dimensions including: 5’ × 10’, 5’ × 12’, 6’ × 9’ and 6’ × 10’. These walk-ins provide plenty of room for hanging clothes, usually along either (or both) long sides of the closet. Shelves and other storage solutions can be placed on the short end or beneath where the clothes hang.

How Big Should a Luxury Walk-In Closet Be?

Luxury walk-ins are usually large, some more than 100 square feet. In addition to the size, luxury walk-in closets often feature elevated elements like central islands that can be used to store or display items like jewelry, watches or other things that hold personal value. Luxury walk-ins also often have areas for displaying shoes, bags, accessories and similar items.

Does Closet Size Affect Home Value?

In a word, yes! But that doesn’t mean that size should be the only consideration. The layout and quality of the materials, design and construction can also influence the value of your home. Perhaps more importantly, a high-quality, well-designed walk-in closet adds value to your day-to-day life by providing the storage you need and a space that reflects your personality. By choosing a trusted custom closet designer to install and renovate your walk-in, you are boosting the value of your home while also getting the functionality you crave.
